


Nature Journaling and Place-Based Learning
Kelsey's therapeutic recreation professional practice background is in the areas of aquatic therapy, adaptive aquatics, therapeutic use of exercise, therapeutic camps, and nature-based therapeutic recreation and wilderness / adventure therapy.
Kelsey has worked as an instructor in the Building Better Bones (Osteoporosis) Program, Arthritis Aquafit, and Cardiac Rehab Programs at the Scarborough YMCA, as a Disabled Adult Conditioning (DAC) Facilitator and Aquatics for Everyone Instructor at Variety Village in Toronto, and as an Aquatic Therapeutic Recreationist for St. Joseph’s Care Group in Thunder Bay. During her undergraduate studies, Kelsey volunteered as a Beachfront and Wilderness First Responder Staff member for Camp Quality Thunder Bay, as a Camper Inclusion Facilitator for YMCA Summer Camps and day camps in the Thunder Bay area, as a wilderness guide and medical responder on backcountry expeditions for at-risk and adjudicated youth, and youth living with mental health challenges in Northern Ontario and Northern Quebec.
Kelsey's emerging academic work in this area focuses on:

self-care for pre-service and in-service therapeutic recreation students;

nature-based therapeutic recreation, and adventure therapy;

intentional therapeutic recreation programming within oncology camps, including program design, staff training, program implementation, and program evaluation; and,
-
risk management planning and therapeutic camps including mechanisms for improving the coordination of staff and volunteer responses to accidents, incidents and near misses through training and professional development.
